Buying beauty products in Spain for women of colour..(is the struggle that real?)

Hola chicaass y chicos!

Perdone para mi silencio en mi blog! He estado muy ocupado.

This blog post is going to be my break down on all the best places to go to buy beauty products and tools when in Madrid, as a woman and a woman of colour.

So this is going to be more relevant to the guys than girls, but equally I know it’s 2018 and guys can wear just as much make-up as girls (and they do it better than me most of the time haha).

For me, being of woman of colour in a predominantly white European city was at first quite a shock to the system. I’m used to walking down oxford street and seeing every colour skin you can think of and I love that.

But here I became aware very quickly that I would more often than not, be the only person of colour on the bus, metro, train or even in my work place at times.

This hasn’t been threatening, but it has been strange at times when you catch someone staring at you for the whole bus journey out of pure curiosity I imagine and hope.

It became an even stranger experience for me when I started to run out of my foundation, concealer, contouring palette and highlighter and thought crap I don’t know where to buy any of this stuff here!

Sephora I hear you shouting at me from behind your screen but, alas I’m a woman on a budget. I needed some more affordable brands like I’m used to at home such as Maybelline, Rimmel and Barry M.

So I’ve been on a long and exciting journey over the last 8 months (I KNOW 8 MONTHS!), to give you some insights into the best shops to buy all your beauty necessities. Yes concealer is a necessity when you’re an ESL teacher.

5. In at number five is KIKO Make Up Milano.

One of the great things about Madrid is that most make-up brands both affordable and high-end have large, individual stores rather than having all their products crammed onto one shelf in a department store.

KIKO is absolutely everywhere in Madrid and is excellent for having an amazing range of base products (all the concealer my heart desires). However, they do tend to have only a few shades for each category of colour, light, medium, and dark.

I know that they cater for their clientele but it just doesn’t have enough variety for my skin tone.

GO to KIKO for all things lips, their lipstick tubes are so gorgeous and feel and look really expensive, and eyes, like all the foil, glitter, matte shades of eye shadow you can handle.

4. Coming in fourth place is the Body Shop.

You know the name you know the deal. Body Shop has all the things a person needs for the bathroom, cleansers, masks, shower gel, body butter, perfume, and lots of make up options.

I was impressed with their shade range in foundation and the price was an affordable 22 euros a bottle.

The stores in Madrid are constantly have some sort of sale and there are always sets of bathroom and make up products being sold on offer. They’re a little pricey sometimes but with the deals you can justify your Rose scented shower gel just as much as me!

3. Third place goes to NYX.

The holy grail of liquid lipstick, and lip products in general.

I have heard amazing reviews of NYX control drop foundation and I personally use their conceal and contour kit on a daily basis and it is the best. Here you will definitely find your shade no matter what cool, neutral or warm tone you are.

The only downside is this is of course only one brand in one shop and so you may want a bit more variety in your beauty diet.

2. The runner up in the list is Sephora. SHOCK.

Sephora is an incredible shop yes and does also have a variety of brands that will cater to my (and probably your) skin tone. However, all the brands at Sephora are high end and in a nutshell too expensive for my budget!

Don’t write off Sephora no, no, no. I do adore the shop and often go in for their own brand face masks which are heavenly and for when I want to treat myself to a luxury item or two!

Also of note is their own brand Sephora makeup which is much more affordable than the other brands in the store and are still very high quality products. The 10hr foundation comes in a plethora of shades and tones and is an extremely affordable 15 to 17 euros a bottle!

So definitely if you can visit the iconic beauty store and enjoy all the beautiful products they have to offer.

and so number one on the list of recommendations is and probably the unknown dark horse in this competition…

1. PRIMOR…

Que? I hear you say. Well let me tell you about Spain’s best beauty supply – kinda rivals boots – but doesn’t have a loyalty card-and it does perfume – store.

You can buy dry shampoo here! I repeat you can buy dry shampoo here!! The only other place in Madrid that I’ve found dry shampoo is Primark and it’s too tempting to buy the rest of the store when I go in there.

Also the variety of brands will have you in this shop for hours on end as you can buy everything from face/body wash, face masks, hair treatments, waxing strips, all the creams, and perfume too.

Make-up is just one part of Primor but it’s best part in my opinion. It’s the only place in Madrid where you can find a lot of British make-up brands such as Rimmel, and even Makeup Revolution which isn’t even available in Boots yet in the UK.

With such an array of brands you can find foundations and other base products to suit most skin tones HURRAH.

Only downside is again sometimes it is a little difficult to find as shade as dark as me, let alone darker, if they are short on stock. However as the store has A LOT of brands you’re more likely to find an affordable foundation at Primor than in any of the other stores.

So that’s my breakdown of what I consider to be the best shops in Madrid to buy beauty products for women of every colour! Hope this is helpful if you find yourself in Madrid and have forgotten your foundation at home, or are new to Madrid and need to get your essentials fast!

Febrero en Madrid 2018/ February in Madrid 2018

IMG_4642The sunset over Madrid

Welcome back for another low down of my month in Madrid. Much more balanced month in terms of relaxation and excitement as January felt pretty exhausting! Enjoy the read…

Week 1: This week I went to Valencia and boy was it beautiful. I can see why there is a lot of talk about Valencia on the tourist market.

The historic Parc de Capçalera in Valencia is famous as it used to be a river.

Also because the people of Valencia voted for the dried up river bed to become a park, rather than a motorway as was suggested by the government.

It is a beautiful park and has an excellent 5k running track going through it! I love running and so wished I’d brought some proper gear haha.

The food was spectacular, definitely try the pulpo and the paella Valencia of course! The wine was excellent as usual in Spain and I enjoyed sitting in what felt like a very authentic tapas bar.

The number 1 highlight for me was being on a beach again – nothing beats having the sand under your feet and the sun on your face. I will definitely be going back!

Week 2: The only way to describe this weekend was as a lazy, sleepy weekend. We all need time to recharge – especially an introvert like me haha.

So I enjoyed a weekend of cooking, reading and binge watching. Nothing better than that.

Also went shopping in Sol in the snow! Which is great because Madrid was literally empty – except for the Starbucks which was especially packed.

Finished reading The Defining Decade by Meg Jay – an absolutely must read for ANY  twentysomething reading this blog! It’ll change how you think about your twenties for sure! Thank you to the dear friend who recommended it to me!

Week 3: This weekend a friend from home came to visit Madrid and me. We had an amazing time! Copious amounts of good wine, cheese, jamon and bread haha.

Overindulged in the indoor markets of Madrid – both San Ildefonso, a great hip and trendy market (which I’ve definitely mentioned before on this blog) and San Miguel, which reminded me of an indoor Borough Market (and will definitely be mentioned again on this blog!)

We spent a lot of our time wandering around Madrid and found a great little candle and incense shop in Malasana. Burning that nag champa as I type!

Also went on a tapas tour with SANDEMANS NEW EUROPE TOURS.

Definitely recommend – over 2.5 hours we went to three different tapas restaurants ranging from modern and fresh to classic and wholesome. All for only 20!

Managed to have all my favourite Spanish tapas dishes including croquettas, tortilla, patatas bravas, jamon and cheese platas, paella, pickles and olives. (and lots of wine!)

Also started reading Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge – I’m sure everyone’s heard of this book but more on that when I’ve finished it.

IMG_4758CHEESE!!!

Week 4: Hola Marzo as this weekend is actually the first in March but oh well!

This weekend is another chill one, went to watch RuPauls Drag Race All Stars 3 in Chueca which is always awesome and then to a bar to continue quoting and discussing Drag Race Herstory.

The rest of the weekend I’ll spend relaxing and enjoying having some time to pamper myself. Also I’m obsessed with Love Sick on Netflix – so I’ll finish that by the end of the weekend I’m sure.

Started reading Moon Over Soho – the second book in the River of London wizard detective series by Ben Aaronovitch. An excellent writer, especially in his depictions of London, he is definitely a Londoner with the in-jokes and comments on the London scenery that I can relate to massively!

Also finally booked my tickets to go home for Easter – London I’m coming for ya!

Thanks for reading, means the world to me to be able to share this experience with y’all!

Check back next month for the Easter review!

Enero en Madrid/ January in Madrid

Hola mis amigos,

I’m back for another term in Madrid and here’s what I’ve been up to in January…

Week 1:

  • work, work, work, work, work, work – no change there. Re-settling back into work life and Madrid life too!
  • I celebrated a few friends birthdays at the weekend, which involved going to a gay club and then having Thai food the next day. Needless to say this was an awesome weekend. Turns out I may even prefer gay nightclubs to ‘straight’ clubs – way more dancing and way more fun!
  • Focusing on stressing a lot less*, and doing a lot more things that I enjoy such as reading, listening to music and exploring Madrid more. *not letting work overwhelm/upset me.
  • Started to do Spanish lessons again!!!

Week 2:

  • Finished reading another book – the book worm is back.
  • Went to the Women’s March in Plaza Isabel II, see my blog post on it here ‘Every woman is a riot.’ Feeling super inspired after this.
  • Ate the most heavenly crepe at Prep La Crepe (near Colon) – filled with cheese, serrano jamon, olives and pesto. What foodie dreams are made of!
  • Went shopping in Madrid, clearly my favourite thing to do. I can’t seem to resist a Lefties sale.
  • Ate at 100 Montadito’s (again!) – the best value sandwich shop ever! Absolutely rammed on a Sunday night though mind you! Near Gran Via.

Week 3:

  • Walked through a beautiful indoor market near my work – which I have completely forgot the name of haha! Full of jamon de Serrano and wine bars. Near Velazquez.
  • Decided on possibly going to Valencia in February woo!
  • Went to a great burger bar called MEAT – the name says it all. Big, juicy burgers and delicious milkshakes, which they can also add of shot of liquor to! Near Alonso Martinez.
  • Watched the first episode of All Stars 3 in a bar in Chueca – amazing atmosphere (motha Ru we luv u in Madrid xo)
  • Went to a friends leaving party. Sweet and sad all at the same time.
  • Started season 2 of One Day at a Time on Netflix – great for practicing a little Spanish.
  • Finished another book called A River In Darkness by Masaji Ishikawa. A sad and harrowing memoir of a mans escape from North Korea. You feel humble and grateful for everyday essentials after reading this.

Week 4:

  • Found a fabulous coffee shop in Serrano, its posh but not overpriced – macaroons to die for!
  • Went to Primor (Spanish boots ladies!) and stumbled upon baptiste dark dry shampoo!! Finally!
  • Ate authentic Naples style pizza at restaurant NAP in Anton Martin – check it out for cheap and lovely Italian food (and a cheeky shot of limoncello).
  • Got a new favourite bar – Xelavid – also in Anton Martin. Comfortable international vibe, still with the traditional Spanish drinks (they do a lovely spiced vermouth on tap) and they still give you free tapas woo!
  • Booked my trip to Valencia!! Super excited and I can guarantee they will be a blog post with lots of photos on that!
  • Continuing to watch Mind of a Chef Season 5 on Netflix – excellent show but make sure you have snacks near by if you don’t want your stomach to start grumbling.

So Enero en Madrid has been pretty awesome. Here’s looking at you February – be good to me!

Speak soon,

DaniJune.

‘Every woman is a riot’ (‘Toda mujer es una revolución’)- The Women’s March Madrid 2018

DISCLAIMER: This is not femi-nazi rant, or an attempt to scold the male population of the world. If you think that’s what feminism is, I beg you please look it up in a dictionary.

IMG_4503

As Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie  famously said:

Feminist: the person who believes in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes.“*

The key word there being EQUALITY, not ‘one gender is better than the other.’

So on Sunday 21st of January 2018  Madrid took part in the global Women’s March, against the key issues women face today and mainly in American society.

It was a victorious afternoon and the stories, poems, and speeches made by both men and women were interesting and relevant.

It was great to have a safe space to discuss and express ourselves and our opinions, as feminists, without the fear of attack.

It was brilliant to see the multiracial and multi linguistic crowd interacting so positively at such a powerful movement.

Some of the issues talked about include:

  • abortion laws in both the USA and Ireland.
  • The #metoo movement of women being silenced over acts of sexual harassment or abuse in both professional and casual environments.
  • The need to keep this movement going so that women may see equal opportunities and pay in the workplace.

Also for me personally, it was comforting to see black women so involved.

A trio of women performed Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou and paid homage to fallen Afro-American women.

They also talked about the importance of this movement of women not being just for a day, and the importance of women everywhere to notice each other everyday in the street, and to watch out for each other in our daily lives.

Such a beautiful and enlightened message.

As the evening drew to a close I had a sense of humbleness after seeing the solidarity of so many women and men standing up for equality of the sexes.

To me it seems we must be on the path to equality, even if we still have a way to go.

We must let go of this idea that one gender is evil, or wrong, or less, and we need to start discussing where society has gotten us and how we can continue to move forward.

Until next time,

Dani

My top 3 memories from my first 3 months living in Madrid…

Yesterday marked my three month Spainiversary.

I can’t believe that I’ve managed to live and work for three months in a completely different country.

I would be lying if I said it was all tapas and tinto de veranos, and I have had numerous days where I felt like I regretted my decision.

But I’ve had way more ‘ups’ than ‘downs’ and those are the memories I won’t ever forget.

So here’s my top three memories of my life in Madrid so far…

  1. Celebrating the 1 month mark with two of my friends at a fabulous indoor food market called Mercado San Ildefonso. Try the burritos, or empanadas or crepes…the list could go on.
  2. Shopping in the thrift shops in Malasana, the trendiest area in Madrid. Way cooler than Shoreditch (sorry but it’s true).
  3. Seeing all the Christmas lights and going to the Christmas markets in Plaza Mayor and Opera and having a famous Bocadillo Calamares at La Campana.

I’ve had such a wonderful three months, and I’ve learnt an incredible amount about my job, myself and Madrid.

I have been blown away by how calm and good natured the Spanish people are. Their way of life is way more relaxed than the London life I’m used to so I’m still adapting to the slow walking haha.

The food and drink in general has been amazing and I don’t think I’ll ever get enough of 3 euro bottles of wine that actually taste amazing, or eating croquetas at all hours of the day.

Spending time in Retiro park has truly made me feel content and calm every time I step foot in it. I’ve read more books in that park, than I have in the last year.

I also can’t get over the sense of personal achievement I have, even though it’s the end of the term and I’m dying to see my family and friends back home.

Hoping the next three months will bring even more discoveries 🙂

Bucket list for next term:

  • Learn much, much, much more Spanish!
  • Go to more museums and galleries.
  • Travel to towns and cities surrounding Madrid.

(Check back next term to see if I do any of these things haha!)

How to actually get a NIE in Madrid 2017/2018.

Hey hey hey,

Guess what took me 4 or 5 appointments, countless documents photocopied, and 1 incredible colleague and friend? Getting my NIE.

So to save you all from going through my battle with Spanish bureaucracy, here is my step-by-step guide on how to get your NIE and Cita Previa (which you need for absolutely everything here in Spain).

  1. Don’t go to Calle San Felipe 7, as its not guaranteed they will give you the NIE. I waited three hours to be told that I needed to make an appointment elsewhere to get the NIE.
  2. Do book an appointment for the Padre Piquer office on https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplus/index.html, select your region, and then select CERTIFICADO-UE and then follow the on screen instructions.
  3. DO make sure you have all the relevant documentation and a copy of the emailed confirmation of your appointment time.
  4. You’ll need (British citizen): Passport, Spanish social security number (alta letter), the ex-18 application form, the 790-tax form*, a copy of your work contract, a letter stating your annual salary.
  5. *make sure you’ve already paid for the tax form, it’ll cost you 10.71 – go to a Sabadell bank – they are very helpful but you must pay in cash there.
  6. Make sure you have the original and copies of all these documents.
  7. Do turn up early on the day of the appointment – show up late and get shown the door.
  8. Do bring someone who speaks Spanish if you don’t feel confident enough.
  9. Show your confirmation email and tax form on arrival to the reception.
  10. Wait for your number to be called and go to your table, you will have to confirm all relevant personal data.
  11. Get your NIE and CITA PREVIA!!

I really hope this is helpful to anyone who is confused by the system in Spain. I know I was.

(Do always check with the official websites as this information will surely change in coming years)

Top 3 classic Christmas films…

I’m a sucker for old movies, and I’m talking like 40s to 70s old.

1.  Sabrina 1954 (the original!) – It’s not a Christmas film but it has all the feel-good vibes of one.

It’ll make you feel itchy for a makeover and ready to go into the Christmas period with some Hepburn sass!

2.   It’s a wonderful life! – obvious choice I know. But it remains an absolute fave of mine and reminds me to be humble at this time of year.

Especially when we’re relentlessly encouraged to spend, spend, spend, rather than reflect and be grateful for the priceless things we already have!

(Alright, I’ll stop being a soppy git now).

3.  Singing in the Rain – It’s on almost every Christmas at the graveyard time of around 4pm or at 8am. And it’s AMAZING!

You’ll be humming the title song all day, and laughing your socks off at how terrible cinema must have been in the early days when films stopped being silent!

So get yourself a glass of Baileys and enjoy watching something different, but still merry, this Christmas!

*pours litre of Bailey into jug and inserts straw, whilst singing ‘have a holly, jolly Christmas, it’s the best time of the year…’*

Bridget Jones Abroad – episode uno

Dear Diary,

Ever wonder if your life is doom for continual failure…me too.😨

Since I moved to Spain, catastrophe seems to be my middle name.

Fridays have gone from the best, to the most traumatic day of the week.

Last Friday for instance, it was 12.45am and instead of being able to get into the bathroom (which I desperately needed to do) I was smacked in the face by my bathroom door.

The lock was jammed and I had to sprint down the corridor to the main bathroom (sorry sleeping flatmates).

Locked inside my bathroom remained my face wipes, toothbrush, hair straighteners and face cream, aka EVERYDAY ESSENTIALS.

Friday morning around 9.45am, a whole glass of water cascades onto my laptop (it survived thank the lord).

Friday morning around 11am, I’m turned away from another bureaucracy appointment (3rd time rebooked).

Friday around 12.20pm, I manage to break into my bathroom using a screwdriver and a pair of tweezers (just call me Handy Man Dan).

Friday around 7pm, realization hits me that I have planned an extra lesson that I’m never going to teach…(will the day just end already).

And this is just a snippet of what Fridays, and days in general have been like in Spain. (Saturday morning I found out my Spanish bank card arrived – in London…:/)

But if you don’t laugh, you’ll cry right?!

Don’t get me wrong I’ve loved it, I’m having fun and I’m learning so so much. Me encanta Madrid ❤

But still I’m hoping the next month will be less chaotic and a little less Bridget Jones-y!

Till next time,

Dan 🙂
